The solar skin
Sunreef launched the Sunreef 80 Eco in 2022 as the first yacht with the yard's composite-integrated solar system: photovoltaic cells laminated directly into the hull sides, superstructure and bimini rather than bolted on as panels. The system won the UIM Environmental Award in 2021 before the first yacht was even launched.
On a pre-owned Eco yacht, ask for the measured solar output rather than the nominal figure, and check whether any panels or sections have been repaired or replaced.
Propulsion and batteries
Eco yachts use electric motors fed by battery banks, with generators as range extenders on most configurations. The result is quiet low-speed running and the ability to spend nights at anchor without a generator running, which is the everyday luxury most owners cite.
Batteries are a wear item. The documents that matter are the battery health or capacity reports, the charge-cycle history and any cell replacements. A five-year-old bank with full reports is easier to price than a newer one without documentation.
Range and honest expectations
An Eco yacht is not an unlimited-range electric vessel. Electric range depends on speed, sea state and hotel load, and the generators remain part of the system for longer passages. What the architecture genuinely changes is noise, vibration, fuel burn at displacement speeds and time at anchor.
When comparing two Eco yachts, compare the real cruising profile you intend: island-hopping at 6 to 8 knots suits the system well; long upwind deliveries still rely on the conventional side of the installation.
Service and support
The Eco systems are proprietary, so the service network matters. Ask where the yacht has been serviced, whether software updates are current, and which yard or technician knows the specific installation. This is a smaller consideration in the Mediterranean than in remote cruising grounds.
For the right buyer, Eco is the most interesting specification in the current range. For a buyer who plans long independent passages far from service support, a conventional yacht with a strong generator setup can be the more honest choice. We will say so either way.
